Jessica: Wow. That is a very cool (and a little creepy -- but mostly cool) story. In fact, it's quite lovely. Except for the part where your uncle got covered in ashes. I love that your family also flouted the rules and decided to do it YOUR way, regardless of the MAN. I'm sure your grandmother is very happy in her resting place. Thanks for sharing.

We scattered my grandmother's ashes as well. Half of them went out over a beach-side cliff (where the wind promptly turned directions and got all over my uncle's pants and shoes). The other half went on my grandfathers grave. My uncle dig a little hole on top of my grandfather's grave (while my mom and I stood guard) and poured the rest of my grandmother's ashes in the hole, and tamped the dirt and grass back into place. He stood up and we all looked around to make sure nobody had seen us. When we looked back down, there was a small white silk flower in the exact spot when the ashes were. Almost like my grandfather was bringing her one last flower. It was one of the coolest/creepiest moments ever.

Stephanie Barr: Aw, thanks for reading this post. It's a special one for me. I love that your dad gets to feed a tree. That's a nice way to deal with ashes. I think my dad was pleased with our little ceremony, too.

My father was also cremated and is also the source of my own sense of humor. He died three years ago. My mom put his ashes in a cookie jar (an idea he would have loved) until the cherry tree is big enough for him to be spread beneath it. As a plant physiologist, there's nothing he would have wanted more than to feed a tree he loved.

Yeah, he was like that. This was very touching to me.

Thank you, Patricia! It's not always easy to know what to do. Our dad was pretty easygoing, tho, so I think he'd be fine almost anywhere.

I tried visiting your link but I'm getting a Google error message. I'll keep trying.

Jen,
Thanks so much for the comment. Yes, I feel pretty sure our dad appreciated it. We've since figured out the duck must be female, but this whole afterlife thing works in mysterious ways!

I love the title of your blog. Looking forward to reading some of your posts.

What a great tribute to your dad. I took my dad's ashes and spread them along the bank of his favorite fishing spot. It was probably where he was happiest.
