Men, I doubt many of you are familiar with The Look.
Ladies, most of you probably know what I’m talking about, especially if you’re in your 40s and love to eat. You’ve either given or received The Look at some point.
In my Zumba class today, I got The Look from the instructor, who I wouldn’t say is a close friend but who is super nice and friendly and I love her. I was standing there, wrangling my hair into a ponytail, and I turned around as she approached me.
She had The Look on her face.
OMG, I thought to myself. I’m getting The Look! My stomach flip-flopped in anticipation and I carefully arranged my face so as to seem unsuspecting.
The Look is hard to describe, but you know it when you see it. It’s usually an open-mouthed, wide-eyed expression of surprised delight. It means just one thing and it always precedes the comment:
“You’ve lost weight!”
I hugged her, even though I was in the middle of blowing my nose. Wheeee! A few other participants glanced over at me, unimpressed (and possibly disbelieving), but my day was made.
YES! I’ve lost weight: 8 big, fat, stupid pounds, and hard ones, too. So it meant a lot to me to get The Look.
The Look is best delivered by someone who isn’t your mom or husband and who maybe hasn’t seen you in a few weeks. And if you’re wearing shorts and a tank top, you know The Look is genuine.
Thank you, Clover!
If you want to get The Look:
(Note: I don’t necessarily recommend these tips, but this is what I’ve been doing lately, and it’s worked.)
- Try eating a healthy breakfast (fat-free yogurt, fruit), sensible lunch (grilled chicken, salad), and 2 giant bowls of Cap’n Crunch for dinner. I know! But Cap’n Crunch must possess some magically delicious power, because I’ve been eating huge piles of it these last few weeks.
- Work it, sisters. I’m sorry, but it’s true. Especially if you’re in your 40s, and especially if you’re eating huge piles of Cap’n Crunch. I work out—cardio and weights—5 days a week. Zumba alone has been responsible for whittling off 3 inches from my stomach and waist, and I credit the elliptical machine with de-dimpling my thighs.
- Sleep late and go to bed early. This only makes sense. Studies show that people who don’t get enough sleep have trouble losing weight and may even gain weight. Plus the fewer daylight hours, the fewer meals you can pack in.
And don’t forget: Be sure to give The Look whenever you can. You just might make someone’s day.
