I Got The Look

U shonuf do be cookin’ in my book

Men, I doubt many of you are familiar with The Look.

Ladies, most of you probably know what I’m talking about, especially if you’re in your 40s and love to eat. You’ve either given or received The Look at some point.

In my Zumba class today, I got The Look from the instructor, who I wouldn’t say is a close friend but who is super nice and friendly and I love her. I was standing there, wrangling my hair into a ponytail, and I turned around as she approached me.

She had The Look on her face.

OMG, I thought to myself. I’m getting The Look! My stomach flip-flopped in anticipation and I carefully arranged my face so as to seem unsuspecting.

The Look is hard to describe, but you know it when you see it. It’s usually an open-mouthed, wide-eyed expression of surprised delight. It means just one thing and it always precedes the comment:

“You’ve lost weight!”

I hugged her, even though I was in the middle of blowing my nose. Wheeee! A few other participants glanced over at me, unimpressed (and possibly disbelieving), but my day was made.

YES! I’ve lost weight: 8 big, fat, stupid pounds, and hard ones, too. So it meant a lot to me to get The Look.

The Look is best delivered by someone who isn’t your mom or husband and who maybe hasn’t seen you in a few weeks. And if you’re wearing shorts and a tank top, you know The Look is genuine.

Thank you, Clover!

If you want to get The Look:

(Note: I don’t necessarily recommend these tips, but this is what I’ve been doing lately, and it’s worked.)

  • Try eating a healthy breakfast (fat-free yogurt, fruit), sensible lunch (grilled chicken, salad), and 2 giant bowls of Cap’n Crunch for dinner. I know! But Cap’n Crunch must possess some magically delicious power, because I’ve been eating huge piles of it these last few weeks.
  • Work it, sisters. I’m sorry, but it’s true. Especially if you’re in your 40s, and especially if you’re eating huge piles of Cap’n Crunch. I work out—cardio and weights—5 days a week. Zumba alone has been responsible for whittling off 3 inches from my stomach and waist, and I credit the elliptical machine with de-dimpling my thighs.
  • Sleep late and go to bed early. This only makes sense. Studies show that people who don’t get enough sleep have trouble losing weight and may even gain weight. Plus the fewer daylight hours, the fewer meals you can pack in.

And don’t forget: Be sure to give The Look whenever you can. You just might make someone’s day.

Pardon the previous comment, that was a mistake.

*Giving the look* – Congrats on those 8 lbs! You are far more disciplined than me, good for you!

Sabrina!: Thanks so much. Wheee! Another Look! I can’t say I’m disciplined, but I seem to have hit upon a fairly reliable—and doable—regime. Without the Cap’n Crunch, tho, it just wouldn’t work.

I’m ROFL, you are so funny. That face is “the look”. Hopefully people will give me the look in a few weeks. I just get the screw face.

So you’re saying if I eat nothing but bacon for breakfast, that’s kinda bad right? Should switch to Cap ‘N Crunch? Can I have it with bacon?

I’m SO impressed with your commitment to exercise. You deserve to get the LOOK after working as hard as you have. I won’t tell you what looks I get (at least the looks I’m aware I’m getting!)

Way to go JD!! You are my idol!

Way to go JD! See there, time on the elliptical — whether you’re in a rage or not — is time well spent! But you already knew that.

    Congrats!

Natural Woman: Thank you! Oh, man, the “screw face” is the worst. I’m so glad people are getting what I mean by The Look. I had given up on ever seeing it. But there is hope for all…

Kathy: Aw, thank you! I bet you’re getting The Look and just don’t realize it. As for the Cap’n Crunch Diet, I think the idea is to have one thing that you really love–have a lot of it–but then just nibble on a few healthy things for the rest of the day. Hence, you may eat a large quantity of BACON! for breakfast as long as you have a sprig of parsley for lunch and a kernel of corn for supper. Good luck!

Cardiogirl: I almost wonder if it was the rage that burned extra calories. THANK YOU!

GOOD FOR YOU! :-) You SO had me at Cap’n Crunch! And then I went left at “5 days a week”. I’m guessing there’s an “I’m super motivated so you don’t have to be” post here somewhere, yes? Rock on, sister!

Corrina: Aw. Thanks. You so sweet. Yeah, the “5 days a week” is not for everyone. You’ll hear all about my motivation in my upcoming “I Went to a Nude Beach Again” post, which will appear after my vacation, coming up in a week and a half. Ain’t nothing like public nudity to motivate me!

I am giving you the look right now.

    LOOK.

Look. That’s a funny word, isn’t it? Look. Look. Look.

Lord Likely: Ooooh, I felt it!

LOOK! It is a funny word. Not as funny as UNDERPANTS, tho!

    Thanks for The Look!

I gave you the look WAY before your instructor did, but you had no way of knowing since you can’t see me. No really, I knew you were losing weight… I could read it in your writing.

Jeff: Y’know, I thought I sensed something coming from your direction in the last few months. I wasn’t sure, though. It just felt like an icy-cold wind. But now I know. Thank you.
